New Feature - Hand of the Week

This deal continues the principle of having several points of interest from a teaching viewpoint.

West opens a less than robust vulnerable pre-empt, but causing a difficulty for North. Allowing for a mid-range pre-empt, it is reasonable to assign the remaining points equally between partner and East, so give partner 8 and there is just about enough for game.

Double is for take-out, but what if partner bids 4 and is disappointed with the trumps?

So what about 3NT? No doubts about the heart guard. Our teaching material says you must have guards in the suits that have been bid and need not mind about unbid suits. Even if spades are led, it is unlikely to be the A, hence the K should survive. So 3NT it is then, and South judges well to pass.

An early problem in the play is how to tackle the diamonds. Leading from dummy would be nice, but getting there is possible only in spades, sacrificing a trick that might be regretted. Even then, two diamonds might be lost. Leading diamonds from hand is an option, but this looks likely to lose to both the A and Q. A singleton A would not help, as a trick must still be lost to the Q. But what about a singleton Q? Declarer leads the K and bingo, the Q is powerless.

Tyler Event

Last year we played an online multiple teams match versus Tyler Hill Club in Kent. There were 7 teams so 7 separate matches. Teams were matched in approximate order of ability. It proved to be a close and friendly occasion.

This year we have set a date of
Wednesday 10th April.  As a rough guide, the competition is suitable for teams from our main teams events and those normally obtaining positive scores in our 9-high teams events. Please note that matches will be played using BBO. There is no charge for this event.

Please enter your team details below for the event on 10th April 2024. by clicking on the calendar event and completing your details.

If you are looking for a pair to make up a team contact David Lewis who should be able to assist.
